Did You Know Boston Has A Pro Flag Football Team?
Flag football — a helmet-free variation of football — will be in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. It is also among the most popular sports within youth programs, thanks in-part to the NFL’s participation. But did you know that Boston has a professional flag football team?
If you didn’t, they are called the Boston Brigade and they are part of the American Flag Football League (AFFL). 2024 is officially the inaugural season. The Brigade will be sporting the primary color of red with navy blue and white accents. It mirrors many of the color schemes we see in New England with the Patriots, Red Sox, Revolution, and Cannons.
Here Is What You Need To Know About The Boston Brigade And Pro Flag Football
Four teams have been announced thus far. In addition to Boston, there will be the Dallas Ocelots (what’s an ocelot?), Nashville Nighthawks, and the Las Vegas Lucky Sevens (best name of the bunch).
This format of flag football is a seven on seven layout. Each roster contains 12 players. Like the NFL, games are 60-minutes long, with four 15-minute quarters.
“This is the first time a true professional sports structure enters the flag football space! The AFFL taps into the energy of one of the fastest-growing sports in America,” the AFFL states.
Although this is the first season with these four professional teams, the sport of flag football has been incredibly popular. In fact, the AFFL recently announced a national team.
In addition, the NFL’s support has made playing the game and incredibly fun way to learn football. Youth players of all skill levels have the chance to wear flag uniforms that represent a NFL team, with their official logo and color schemes.
What’s On Tap For The Boston Brigade
The regular season starts on April 27. Games are then played weekly on Saturdays, running through June 15. Then, the championship will be held on June 22 in Frisco, Texas. The Boston Brigade will play their home games at Veterans Memorial Field in Quincy. The game dates here will be May 11 and June 1. The league follows a traveling tour format similar to the Premier Lacrosse League.
In the meantime, the AFFL has announced you can pre-order a Brigade replica jersey. You can find Boston ticket information here.
