Market Basket Among Top Grocery Stores in Massachusetts, But Which One Is #1?
Market Basket has been named one of the top grocery stores in Greater Boston. This is according to the website checkbook.org. The report is based on how each store compares based on price of food and quality. 154 items were purchased and compared on its prices and its quality. The #1 grocery store in Greater Boston hands down is Price Rite. Price Rite offers its own brand of generic items and offers items about 20 percent lower than the other stores in the survey. The other two stores that scored high in the survey were Market Basket whose prices were 18% lower and Walmart whose prices were 19% lower. Two other stores showed up in the survey as offering somewhat lower prices and that was Target and Hannaford.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Whole Foods is considered one of the more expensive stores with Wegmans coming up right behind it. While people enjoy Wegmans’ variety of options, they still feel its prices are very high compared to other chains.
When it comes to Stop & Shop and Shaw’s, the survey found that Stop & Shop prices were about 5 percent lower than Shaw’s.
And in regards to quality of food, Stop & Shop, Shaw’s and Star Market actually ranked the lowest. Many customers say the produce, meat and overall quality of food at each of these chains was NOT good.
Overall, when it comes to grocery shopping, it is best to shop around seeing as you can save a lot of money depending on where you shop. If you shop at one of the less expensive stores, you can save thousands per year. More specifically, if you shop at the top store, Price Rite, you will save an average of $2600 per year on groceries.
