Is Ames Making a Comeback? Here’s Everything You Need to Know
Ames is making a comeback! You remember Ames right? If you lived in New England from 1958 to 2002, you do. Ames was an American chain of discount stores that was founded by a group of men from Connecticut (3 brothers and a partner). The first store opened in Southbridge, Massachusetts in 1958 and at the peak of the stores’ existence, there were 700 stores in 20 states.
Unfortunately, lack of sales over the years led to 2 bankruptcy filings. They overcame the first bankruptcy filing in the 90s and would end up making a massive comeback. In the late 90’s Ames would grow to become the fourth biggest store chain behind Targer, Walmart and Kmart. In 2001, Ames would file for its second bankruptcy and eventually close all of its stores by 2002.
The rebirth of Ames stores has been in the works for years now. The Molyneux Group officially announced its resurgence back in 2022 saying they would start rolling out new stores in the spring of this year. As of this morning (March 20), no locations have been announced however there will be locations opening in New England this spring. In total, there will 5 locations up and running by late 2027. There are also rumors of more stores opening in 2028.
Online ordering and delivery will be available. There will also be pharmacies in select locations. There will also be an “Ames Cafe” in select locations. And if you love the nostalgia of Ames coming back, you’ll also love the nostalgia of reliving other businesses from our childhood. How about nightclubs?
