Lowell High School’s New Cell Phone Policy Angers Students, Some Parents Call It a Security Risk
We are all attached to our cell phones. Well, maybe not all of us but a good percentage of us are. And in Lowell High School, students are going to start realizing how life is without cell phones as a new policy has taken effect that will limit the amount of time students can have their cell phones in school. The policy was put in place to reduce distractions and to get students to focus and engage more in the classroom. Here is what the policy entails:
Upon entering a classroom, students must turn off their phones and put them into a designated container. According to a memo that was sent to parents, “Our goal is to create a distraction-free learning environment. We believe that this policy will not only help students stay on task, but it will also promote a more positive and productive classroom experience.”
Now as you can expect students are having a hard time to the policy which just went into effect yesterday. There have also been a lot of parents who are not happy with the policy. A petition has been going around that has gotten over 1200 signatures saying that this new policy creates a significant safety risk. Kendrick Del Orbe, the creator of the petition says “We believe this newer, stricter policy was not crafted with the student’s best interest in mind, nor with our safety and security as a consideration, and this policy has been met with widespread opposition from us students,.”
Despite this new policy, cell phones are still able to be used in hallways and the cafeteria. No word if this policy will be changing anytime soon.
