Northeast Hit With Major Snowstorm

BOSTON, MA – JANUARY 29: A worker shields himself from blowing snow and wind as Winter Storm Kenan bears down on January 29, 2022 in Boston, Massachusetts. A powerful nor’easter brought blinding blizzard conditions with high winds causing widespread power outages to much of the Mid-Atlantic and New England coast. The storm is predicted to drop over 2 feet of snow in some areas. (Photo by Scott Eisen/Getty Images)

Here we go! The first significant snowstorm is on its way for Massachusetts this weekend. Now while all of the local meteorologists are calling for a good several inches of snow for most of the state, it may not be the smartest idea to run out and raid your area grocery stores. Yes, it looks like we will get plowable snow BUT if you live closer to Boston, it may be mostly rain. Let's look at the latest information.

According to WCVB, the storm will actually start late Saturday night (between 7pm and midnight). It will depend on the track of the storm as far as how much snow the state will get. It is looking like anywhere in and around Boston will get much less seeing as how it will mix with rain. However, if you live west of Boston, you will get more plowable snow and the prediction is up to 10 inches of snow in most of the metro west to western part of the state. Keep in mind, it is still only Thursday so these predictions will change.

With this storm on its way, it doesn't hurt to take a look at your area laws as far as space savers go. First, you can only use a space saver when Boston declares a snow emergency. From then, you have only 48 hours to use it after the emergency is lifted. After that, you must remove it from the street. Now just because space savers aren't technically allowed, doesn't mean we'd suggest parking in a spot that has one. If you don't want any angry neighbors or potential damage to your car, we'd suggest you park in a garage or find alternate parking. In the meantime, check out these hilarious space savers in Boston over the years.

It's looking like we have a big snowstorm on the way. It’s expected to bring significant snow to most parts of the state and will be that heavy, wet snow. Plus, there’s going to be a high wind watch as well.

Everything will get started today starting with rain in western MA and traveling across the state reaching Greater Boston between 6pm and 8pm. The rain will change to snow tonight and overnight in western and central MA, with it hitting Greater Boston between 8am and 10am tomorrow morning.

Let's talk snow totals...

One of the toughest parts about winter in Boston is the parking, or lack thereof. It definitely brings out one of the more entertaining aspects of the season...space savers! Space savers are a Boston tradition where people put random objects  in the spot that they shovel out so that no one will take it. If someone moves it, fights ensue! And if you park in someone else's space, you may return to damage to your car. It's not right, but it happens.

My favorite thing about space savers is seeing the ones that people use. Hilarious! Here are some actual photos of Boston space savers. Enjoy!

Let's start with the basics...a chair!

This was definitely the aftermath of the storm where someone's space saver was thrown out.

Nothing says winter storm like a beach chair and a cooler!

Another staple - a table

You have to have a table to go with those chairs right?

Rack and Frame

This is definitely some kind of rack that was broken. And it's not cold enough, so let's bring out the fan. Also probably broken!

A Bucket

Because no one would just kick the bucket out of the way. Wouldn't be my choice. You need something that would be inconvenient to move.

Chair with a message

Well this sounds like a threat. "I wouldn't move these if I were you." And if the note isn't enough, the skeleton was added for dramatic effect.

A Christmas tree

Now there's the holiday spirit! Lol

Not actually saving a space, but quite entertaining and in the holiday spirit!

Triple threat

A triple threat here! A dustpan, fan, and a bucket. This person is SERIOUS!

Laundry Basket

I don't know why I find this so funny. Maybe it's because they went the extra mile to turn it upside down! Lol

A stool

Functional, but basic. A stool.

Looks like vacuum cleaners are a pretty popular (and expensive) space saver!

Oh nice, a bucket of snow to save your space that you just shoveled out. Brilliant!

Turkeys???

Not sure they'll be able to get them to stay put.

A threatening sign

Now thems fighting words!

More threatening signs

And they put a smiley face at the end of the sign! Lol
